Submission: | A Conservative government will proactively assist communities most vulnerable to extreme weather events. A Conservative government will work with provinces to identify the most vulnerable communities and to offer assistance in preparing/adapting for seasonal extreme weather.
|
Rationale: | Extreme weather events—heat waves, droughts, fires or floods—are unavoidable and often foreseeable. When such events occur, many communities are devastated. Anticipation of extreme weather should lead now to action plans which will reduce the affects of those events on communities. Proactive measures—preparation to deal with potential flooding, fires, drought—should be one of the first strategies of government concerned about Weather/Climate. egs.: diking before an emergency occurs, deepening river channels to contain increased volume; preempting and limiting forest fires by controlled burning, firebreak swaths, deciduous planting; where communities exist in predictably vulnerable locations, considering safe alternatives. |
